Fifteen years is a long time to stay quiet if you spent your youth yelling about brass monkeys and sabotage. But that's how long it's been since a Beastie Boy put out new music — until now.

Mike Diamond is back with a song called "Thank You," and the twist is delightful: his sons helped make it happen. Not in some vague, sentimental "inspired by" way. They were actually in the room, actually behind the boards, actually pushing their dad to finish something he might otherwise have let sit in a drawer.

There's something very right about this. The Beasties always felt like a family, even if it was the chaotic, borrowed-from-your-friends kind — three guys who grew up together, in public, changing sounds the way other people change socks. Now half of that story is repeating itself, except the guys teaching Mike D are the ones who used to ride in his backseat.

It's a small, warm rebellion against the usual rules of legacy acts. No reunion tour cashing in on nostalgia. No remastered box set. Just a father, his sons, and a song that apparently needed to exist.

Fifteen years of silence, ended not by a comeback strategy but by dinner-table encouragement. If that's not a good reason to make music again, it's hard to imagine what is.
